Cars and Ghost Signs
Ghost signs are the old hand painted advertisements that were put on many brick buildings years ago. Also called fading ads or brickads, these signs sometimes advertise defunct brands and businesses or 5 cent Coca-Cola and cigars. The painters of these large signs were called "wall dogs" and they used oil-based house paints. The paints that have survived the test of time probably contain lead, which adheres well to brick surfaces.
I became interested in ghost signs when I spotted a Champion Spark Plug sign on an old garage near my home. I thought it would be fun to photograph vintage cars with the sign in the background. Then I decided other ghost signs would make good backgrounds for vintage car photographs as each image would have two points of interest, the car and the sign.
